Claude Skills for Accounting and Audit Teams in the UAE

Cover for Claude Skills in UAE accounting and audit work: automate the mapping, never the judgement

A Claude Skill is your firm’s procedure written down once so Claude follows it every time. For an accounting or audit team in the UAE that means mapping, formatting and checklist work: turning a trial balance into statements, building the working paper index, drafting management letter points. The judgement, the review and the opinion stay with your people. Whether your client needs an audit at all is a separate question, covered in who needs audited financial statements in the UAE.

Key takeaways

  • The jobs worth turning into a skill are the ones that are repeatable and checkable: mapping, formatting, cross-referencing, first-draft disclosure wording.
  • Anything requiring professional judgement should not be in a skill at all. Materiality, going concern, scope and the opinion are not procedure.
  • Under Ministerial Decision No. 84 of 2025, the AED 50 million revenue threshold for audited financial statements applies to a Taxable Person that is not a Tax Group, and all Tax Groups must prepare and maintain audited special purpose financial statements.
  • Settle the client data question before a single file is uploaded, not after.
  • A skill makes the first draft faster and more consistent. It does not shorten review, and it should not be allowed to.
Three key takeaways from the Virtuloom guide: Claude Skills for Accounting and Audit Teams in the UAE
Key takeaways from this guide.

What a skill actually is, in one paragraph

Anthropic describes Agent Skills as “modular capabilities that extend Claude’s functionality”, packaging “instructions, metadata, and optional resources (scripts, templates) that Claude uses automatically when relevant”. A skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file: a name, a short description of when to use it, and your steps in plain Markdown. No code is required. Our guide on how to write a Claude Skill covers the mechanics.

The reason this fits accounting work is that Anthropic’s own framing is about procedure rather than intelligence: “Claude is powerful, but real work requires procedural knowledge and organizational context.” The model knows IFRS in general. It does not know your firm’s lead schedule numbering, your file naming, or which three disclosures your partner always sends back.

Which jobs in a firm are worth turning into a skill?

The test is whether a competent new joiner could follow it from a written page, and whether a reviewer could tell at a glance if it was done wrong. If both are true, it is a candidate.

Job Good skill candidate? Why
Mapping a trial balance to IFRS line items Yes Rule-based, same mapping every year, errors are obvious on review
Building the working paper index and lead schedules Yes Pure structure, your firm has one format
First draft of the notes to the accounts Yes, with review Wording is standard, numbers come from the mapped TB
Drafting the request list sent to the client Yes Same list by account area, adjusted for industry
Management letter points from a list of findings Yes, with review The write-up is formulaic once the finding is identified
Setting materiality No Professional judgement, documented by the engagement team
Concluding on going concern No Judgement on evidence, not a procedure
The audit opinion No Signed by a licensed auditor who carries the responsibility

Notice the pattern in the first group. Every one of them is work a senior currently does twice and a junior does wrong once. That is the cost a skill removes, and it is a real cost, but it is not the same as removing the audit.

A worked example: a trial balance mapping skill

This is illustrative. The account groupings and thresholds are made up, so replace them with your firm’s own before you use anything like it.

# Mapping a trial balance

## Inputs required
Trial balance with account code, account name, debit, credit.
Prior year mapped TB if one exists.
If either is missing, ask. Do not infer the prior year.

## Steps
1. Read MAPPING.md for the firm's standard account groupings.
2. Map every account to one statement line item. Nothing is left blank.
3. Where last year's mapping exists, follow it. List any account
mapped differently this year in a separate table with the reason.
4. Confirm debits equal credits before producing anything. If they
do not, stop and report the difference.
5. Flag for the preparer, do not resolve: suspense and clearing
accounts with a balance, negative balances on asset accounts,
related party accounts, any account not present last year.

## Output
A mapped table: account code, account name, amount, statement line.
Then three lists: new accounts, remapped accounts, flagged items.

## Never
Never post an adjustment. Never net two accounts to make a line work.
Never decide that a flagged item is immaterial. That is the
preparer's call and the reviewer's call, not this skill's.

The “Never” section is the most important part and the one most firms leave out. A skill will follow instructions well past the point where a person would stop and ask. Write the stopping points in.

What a skill must never be allowed to decide

Four things, and they are not negotiable in a professional file.

  • Materiality. A number the engagement team sets and documents, not one a tool proposes.
  • Whether a difference matters. A skill can flag and quantify. The decision that something is not worth adjusting belongs to a person who will sign for it.
  • Going concern and other judgements on evidence. These depend on things the tool cannot see, including what the client said in a meeting.
  • The opinion. The audit opinion is signed by a licensed auditor who carries the responsibility for it.

There is a practical reason beyond professional duty. Anthropic’s own guidance warns against instructions that bury the reader’s judgement, and recommends that skills “handle error conditions rather than deferring” and give one default rather than a menu of options. A skill built to be decisive is useful for formatting and dangerous for judgement. Keep the two apart in separate skills if you have to.

Who in the UAE needs audited financial statements anyway?

This is the question clients ask when a firm suggests tightening its drafting process, so it is worth answering plainly. Ministerial Decision No. 84 of 2025 replaced Ministerial Decision No. 82 of 2023 and applies to Tax Periods commencing on or after 1 January 2025. MD 82 continues to apply to Tax Periods that began before that date.

According to PwC Middle East’s alert on the decision, the AED 50 million revenue threshold “applies to a Taxable Person that is not a Tax Group”. For Non-Resident persons, only revenue from Permanent Establishments or nexuses in the State counts towards that threshold. Separately, the decision “requires all tax groups to prepare and maintain the audited special purpose financial statements”, with further guidance on preparing those statements still to be specified by the Federal Tax Authority at the time of that alert.

Qualifying Free Zone Persons distributing goods or materials in or from a Designated Zone must also “comply with any additional procedures prescribed by the Federal Tax Authorities”.

Check the current position against the official decision and the FTA before relying on any of it. Our post on audit draft preparation in the UAE covers what the draft pack contains.

Client data: settle this before anything is uploaded

A skill holds instructions. The client file is a separate question, and it is the one that stops rollouts in accounting firms.

Four things to agree in writing before the first upload:

  1. Which plan you are on and which terms apply to it. Consumer and commercial terms are not the same document. Read the one covering your account on Anthropic’s own site before client data goes anywhere near it.
  2. What your engagement letter says. If it does not cover processing client records in a third party tool, it needs to before you start, not after a client asks.
  3. What goes in and what never does. Many firms draw the line at anonymised or extracted data for anything leaving the local network. Pick a line and write it down.
  4. Who in the firm can switch skills on. On Team and Enterprise plans, organisation Owners can provision skills for all users, and Enterprise organisations can turn on skill scanning to check uploaded skills and plugins. Use both rather than letting staff upload their own.

This is a governance decision for your partners, not a technical one, and nothing here is legal advice.

A 30-day rollout for a small firm

Week 1. Pick one process. The best first candidate is the one a senior redoes most often, usually TB mapping or the request list. Write down how it is done today, by hand, on one page.

Week 2. Turn that page into a SKILL.md. Anthropic’s advice is to build the tests before the documentation: “Create evaluations BEFORE writing extensive documentation.” In a firm that means picking three past engagements where you already know what the right answer was.

Week 3. Run those three. Compare against the files you actually issued. Where the skill went wrong, fix the instructions rather than the output. Keep the SKILL.md under 500 lines, which is Anthropic’s recommendation, and move the long mapping tables into a separate reference file.

Week 4. Give it to two people who did not write it and watch where they get confused. Then decide whether it goes to the whole firm. One working skill is worth more than six half-written ones.

What this does not fix

It does not shorten review, and a firm that uses it to shorten review has made its file worse, not better. It does not fix a client who sends the trial balance in four versions. It does not replace a licensed auditor, and it is not a substitute for the professional standards your file is held to.

What it does is stop the same work being redone, and make the first draft look the same whoever prepared it. For a small firm in the UAE running several engagements at once, that is usually where the time goes.

How Virtuloom helps

Virtuloom is a technology company, not an audit firm. We build and test the skills and the software around them with your team, using your own past engagements as the test set, and we are clear about where the tool stops. See our custom software and AI automation pages, or our guide to setting up Claude across a company.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude prepare financial statements?

It can produce a draft from a mapped trial balance using your firm’s format and wording. That draft is a starting point. It must be reviewed by a qualified accountant, and where an audit is required, audited by a licensed auditor. Nothing produced this way is a finished statement.

Do I need a developer to build a skill for my firm?

No. A skill is a Markdown file with a short header, and Anthropic’s help pages state that anyone can create skills by writing instructions in Markdown. Scripts are optional and only worth adding for steps that must run identically every time.

Who needs audited financial statements in the UAE?

Under Ministerial Decision No. 84 of 2025, the AED 50 million revenue threshold applies to a Taxable Person that is not a Tax Group, and all Tax Groups must prepare and maintain audited special purpose financial statements. Free zone and Non-Resident rules differ. Confirm your own position with your tax adviser.

Is it safe to upload client data?

That depends on your plan’s terms, your engagement letter and your firm’s own policy, and it is a decision for your partners rather than a technical setting. Agree the rule in writing before the first file, and consider working from extracted or anonymised data where the engagement allows it.

How is this different from the automation in our audit software?

Audit software automates what its vendor built. A skill captures how your firm specifically does something, including the parts no system supports: your naming, your wording, your partner’s preferences. The two sit alongside each other rather than competing.

What happens when the standards change?

You edit the reference file, not the instructions. Anthropic’s authoring guidance is explicit about keeping material that goes out of date out of the main instructions. Putting disclosure wording and mapping tables in separate files is what makes a yearly update a ten minute job.
